The second volume in the Dragonlance short story collection “Dragonlance Tales” this collection includes ten stories set in the universe exploring hidden corners of the world of Krynn, in some cases filling in gaps in the Chronicles and Legends series and, in the case of the Weis and Hickman story, furthering the plot of the “Dragonlance: Next Generation” gang, composed of the three sons of Caramon and Tika Majere.

Usually these kinds of collections are a mixed bag, but this one is surprisingly consistently good, with interesting stories told from interesting points of view, from that of a mad hermit (The Wizard’s Spectacles) to that of a sentient dagger under the orders of Takhisis (Dagger-Flight).

Some of the highlights beyond those stories are stories by names who will eventually become big in the business of tie-in novels, such as Richard A. Knaak’s story about the meeting between a Solamnic Knight and a Minotaur which explores how concepts of honour across cultures and species can still instill a sense of respect and admiration between honourable people. It’s little surprise that Knaak would go on to write some of the best novels on Solamnic Knights (The Legend of Huma, 1988) and Minotaurs (Kaz the Minotaur, 1990).
