So, as we have been seeing Gary Gygax had completely cut his ties to TSR by this point in time, in fact the Dragon magazine that came out this very month (see entry 546) had a featured column by Gary explaining how he has moved on from TSR and has founded his own company New Infinities. This had left his Gord the Rogue series without a home and had led TSR to continue with novels set in the Greyhawk universe through the pen of Rose Estes, starting off a new storyline independent of the Gord stories.

However, Gygax still had Gord stories to tell, and with his own imprint in New Infinities that’s where he is going to continue publishing stories set in Greyhawk. I have been mostly covering TSR products in this project, staying away from third party items for practical reasons (it’s much harder to get a complete list of all of those), but I’ll open an exception for these books. They were written by the father of the game and are very much set in the universe of the game, and although they are not exactly canonical, they are very close to that.

In this volume Gord goes on a quest for an item, called a Theopart, which is also sought by a number of demons. The book is pretty good at giving us more context and histories as well as detailing the behaviour of such demons as Zuggtmoy, Graz’zt, Iggwilv, Iuz and so on, as well as starring some cool villains such as the dwarf Obmi and Eclavdra, the follower of Lolth which starred in some of the early Greyhawk modules (first appearing in G3: Hall of the Fire Giant King). I am not a particular fan of Gygax’s verbose writing style, but there was still much to be enjoyed here, I’d definitely recommend it for those who want to flesh-out the Demon hierarchy and inter-demon relations for their own games, or just as a fun read.
