Now that the Endless Quest books have gone into hiatus until the 90s TSR brings out a new series of solo-adventuring books, this time under the title Catacombs. These are not numbered, and we will only get a handful of them, including one set in a different game than D&D, much as Endless Quest did, but they serve a similar purpose: solo adventures for younger players.

This volume is aimed at a slightly older audience than the EQ books, and that can easily be seen both in the Clyde Caldwell cover, featuring a scantily clad faery, as well as in the interior illustrations by Valerie Valusek which  follow similar themes. Clearly aimed at an audience with more hormonal activity than the EQ books.

As a game it’s ok but nothing to write home about. You get a character, and short paragraphs get you to make decisions which lead you to other paragraphs. One innovation here is the fact that the images in the book, often full page and even as two-page spreads, are relevant to the story and you need to observe them to figure stuff out. There’s also a system with an elf bookmark which aims to mimic random encounters, but that’s a bit unwieldy. As a story it’s just a series of fetch-quests within the title mound.
