An interesting issue of the Polyhedron magazine which shows, in several of its articles, future directions for the game of AD&D. Firstly, as this is the magazine related to the RPGA and the idea of D&D as organized play we get some more details about what will be “The Living City”. This would become the setting for organized play adventures from this year of 1987 until 2004, the city would eventually be named Ravens [sic] Bluff and as we have the Forgotten Realms coming out as the default setting for the game in just a couple of months, it would be folded into that setting and put just south of the city of Tantras.

So yeah, as you can see this is a lasting change to the game and particularly the organized play side of it. Another thing pointing at the future of the game is the really extensive questionnaire about the second edition of AD&D… three hundred questions on the back of the magazine that ask about game habits and what players would desire from a new edition of the game.

So, as we can see 1987 would be a turning point for the game, and although it would still take a couple of years for us to get a new edition, the groundwork was being set this early on in the process, asking the most devoted fans, those into competitive play who would get Polyhedron just because they were registered with the RPGA, for pointers to the future.
