Sharing its name with the 1982 R-3: The Egg of the Phoenix module by Frank Mentzer, this was a limited edition for members of the RPGA association and as such there were never that many around. So, in 1985, in partnership with Jennell Jaquays (who is credited in the module under her deadname, which I won’t use here), Mentzer will re-write that module and add others from the R-series to give us this I12 module.

It’s not a bad module, but the way in which it attempts to articulate all the adventures within it seems a bit forced. After all they were never meant to go together, they were each meant to be a different competitive adventure. However, if you put aside the framing story and the attempt to connect everything up you get good value from what then becomes a kind of anthology of challenging and pretty good adventures.

Also of note is the pretty metal Keith Parkinson cover and some of the interior illustration, even though many of them are repeats from the R- series of modules from earlier in the decade.
