The third and final volume of the Dragonlance Legends series, Test of the Twins gives us a conclusion to the Majere saga as twin brothers Caramon and Raistlin Majere move inexorably towards a climatic finale.

Weirdly enough, for a story that is supposed to focus on the triad of Caramon, Raistlin and Paladin Cleric Crysania, the book spends the majority of its time with Caramon and Tasslehoff Burrfoot, the somewhat annoying kender, and even Tanis Halfelven gets more page-time than Raistlin who’s story this ostensibly is.

It is therefore a bit of a hit and miss book, a bit unfocused; it only really comes into its own when we return to the relationship of the twins or follow Raistlin’s devious plans to take over Krynn. Fortunately the book gets better towards the end, with a truly emotional finale that puts an end to the story of the (not so) nefarious Raistlin and sees Caramon ready for a new stage in his own life. This was also Weis and Hickman’s (temporary) goodbye to Dragonlance, however the success of the series meant that it wouldn’t take long for TSR to get them back on board for new stories, and this would be the story for the foreseeable future, leaving and coming back, sometimes with bigger gaps or some kind of conflict with TSR or WotC, but Weis and Hickman would always be so tightly connected to this world that their voices would always be valuable.  So much so that next month, in 2024, there will be a new Dragonlance book by them, another conclusion to another trilogy.
