This collection of AD&D gamebooks has been adapting some classic modules to gamebook mode in between new stories, and this is a good example of that. Such a story-oriented module as Ravenloft would always be a good one to adapt into a book format, and that is exactly what is done here.

Of course there are adaptations, you play as a single character and not with a party. You are Jeren Sureblade, a level 15 Paladin (it’s important to be high level as some undead can actually take levels away from you) and your mission is to rid Castle Ravenloft of its lord and master, Strahd Von Zarovich.

One of the cool little things in this gamebook is the way in which it attempts to adapt the mechanics of the original module to gamebook mode. Instead of using the Tarokka Deck randomization system (which would be too complex for a gamebook and would make little sense without a DM to interpret what it means) you get a system where dice rolls randomize the contents of certain rooms. This rewards exploration so that you can get certain items that will make your final boss fight easier and it also makes the book more replayable because you never know what you will find behind a certain door. Good stuff.
