TSR had published, up until late 1984, the Fantasy Forest series of gamebooks, aimed at young children. Now in 1985 that segment of the gamebook market is catered to by a collection of books based on the animated TV show. This makes complete sense and it’s actually weird that it didn’t happen before.

This first volume, written by Margaret Weis of Dragonlance fame, follows Bobby the Barbarian, and each successive volume would centre on one of the characters of the party. So, you play Bobby, and unsurprisingly your friends have all been kidnapped by Venger and taken to the titular Tower of Midnight Dreams. You have to rescue them.

Clearly aimed at a young audience, it’s not a bad book for that end. The choices are obvious, the tone is even lighter than that of the TV series and in no way is this trying to be a more grownup gamebook like those in the Fighting Fantasy series or even the Endless Quest series, but it is a fun little adventure which even introduces a new ally in the shape of a tribble-like prankster furball.
