A little more than a year before this episode came out two major cute and influential bear-like creatures made their debut. The most obvious of these are the Ewoks in 1983’s Return of the Jedi, but also in April 1983 you had the debut of the TV special  “The Care Bears in the Land Without Feelings”. Now if you can imagine a mix between Ewoks and Care Bears you get the little creatures that debut in this episode, the Cloud Bears.

Cloud Bears live in large tree villages connected to each other, exactly like Ewoks but they have heart powers like Care Bears. Although here the heart powers are these glowing jewels known as Heart Stones which are a bit like kryptonite to Venger. This is why he wants to destroy the bears. In order to achieve this he manages to capture Hank and Bobby.

The titular traitor is, of course, a bit of a red-herring, but I don’t want to spoil it here. Let’s just finish by saying that this really isn’t one of my favorite episodes. There isn’t anything particularly scary or cool in this episode, and the Cloud Bears themselves seem a bit out of place in the series, seemingly aimed at a much younger crowd than the 8-12 year old target of the series. Even so it’s a fun watch, if nothing else to witness the Blatant Rip-Off Bears!
