A pretty atypical Dragon magazine for the April issue, which is usually an April Fools issue with a lot of humorous content, this year we get what is just a regular issue of Dragon and if anything a sadder issue than most, as it marks the departure of Phil Foglio’s What’s New With Phil and Dixie comic strip, which was the funniest thing in the magazine. Not to worry though Foglio Fans, What’s New will return! First to The Duelist magazine (a Magic the Gathering magazine, which is where I first met Phil and Dixie as a young player) in 1993 and then when that magazine died it returned to Dragon from 1999 to 2003. One day, a few years from now, I’ll surely be covering that!

We also get articles on Magic Users and their familiars, Ed Greenwood’s giving us the ecology of the Trapper, a larger article about Rakshasas and friends as well as Frank Mentzer’s preview of the D&D companion box set that we covered in the last post.

Lastly we get the first part of a two part RPGA adventure, The Twofold Talisman. This also marks the first time that Ares magazine gets incorporated into Dragon, meaning there’s plenty to read here for fans of SF roleplaying in their own separate section.
