Another fun episode, this one introduces us to Kelek, a wizard underling of Venger who has plans to surpass his boss and become the new master. The second, and I think, last episode written by Paul Dini, this time with Karl Geurs, another famous animation veteran, it’s easy to see that it was a series that, although clearly aimed at young kids, was pretty smartly written.

Venger remains one of the more interesting characters, with the kids using him as a weapon against the more urgent danger of Kelek and his attack on the unicorns, it really helps blur notions of good and evil and how there are greater, lesser and more and less urgent evils. This is some complex morality for a kids series, and that’s a good thing that often writers, talking down to kids, seem to forget that they are able to understand.

We also get introduced to the valley of the unicorns, and to the pretty awesome Kelek fortress, the animation is pretty good throughout, and you can see, particularly in Kelek’s character design, the influence of Toei studios and Japanese animation in the design of characters. Again, fun stuff worth revisiting.
