So, recently as this comes out, TSR had purchased another gaming company, SPI and with SPI came DragonQuest, a kind of competitor to D&D, which means now TSR has two (and a half, seeing as D&D and AD&D two differentish games) fantasy themes tabletop RPGs. DragonQuest had a big selling point which was the fact that it focused on skills rather than classes, which made for more customisable characters, you spend XP to buy skills and you build your character as you go along. That seems fun.

This issue of Imagine is focused on DragonQuest, which means that other than the usual columns for beginning role players as well as a pretty good review of the D&D Basic Set towards the end of the issue, there is little of interest for the AD&D or D&D player here.

Imagine continues to be a magazine that has some potential, but never seems to really take off, this isn’t the case with this issue, which consists of original articles, but the reliance on reprints from the American Dragon magazine as the core of Imagine, always makes it feel like an afterthought and unable to stand on its own two feet. Hopefully it gets better before it’s gone (it only had 30 issues).
