The first of the D&D Endless Quest books not written by Rose Estes (don’t worry, she’ll be back, for #13, and later on in this project for 6 full Greyhawk novels!), this one was brought to us by Linda Lowery, who would write another Endless Quest book and a couple of the HeartQuest books coming up.

It’s interesting to see, for a hobby which was really male oriented at the time, how much of the fiction about the game was actually written by women writers. From the first D&D novel, Quag Keep by André Norton (pen name of Alice Norton) to the Endless Quest books by Rose Estes and now Linda Lowery, only in 1984, 10 years after the release of the game will we get a volume of D&D fiction authored by a man. Even then, women remain an important part of the shaping of the lore, lest we forget Laura Hickman’s contributions to making adventures more lore heavy or Margaret Weis’ part in the development of Dragonlance and the writing of the extremely successful novels.

Back to the subject at hand, in this Endless Quest we are the stepchild (our gender is never specified, interestingly, first nonbinary protagonist in the series) of the Wizard of Eternal Spring who gets cursed by the Winter Wizard and we have to go off and find a cure. As usual there are several possible paths, and even if this adventure is a bit wordier and has less of a flowing narrative than those written by Estes, it’s still an entertaining couple of hours worth of reading as you explore alternate paths to a successful conclusion.
