A very innovative and different adventure from most of the stuff around in 1983, this is emblematic of the way TSR was attempting to create more variety within adventure modules, whether it be through the Hickmans’ more plot oriented adventures or in this case a module which has no dungeon or wilderness area to explore, but which is really a murder mystery.

So you are in the town of Restenford and the local baron gets murdered, your party is tasked with solving the mystery of his murder and you only have a couple of clues that point to the town of Garrotten (nice pun , Len). There isn’t much in terms of monsters or dungeons, what you’ve got here is a kind of medieval police procedural.

This results in a kind of mixed success, it’s good because it’s something different you can give your players to break up any hack and slash exhaustion, but D&D wasn’t exactly a game designed for this kind of heavy roleplay and lack of action, that’s something that works better in other systems, such as Call of Cthulhu, for example. Still, original enough that you should definitely give it a go.
