The fifth and sixth book in the Endless Quest series came out right as 1983 was beginning and in this case our hero (Galen) is thrown into the middle of a Dwarven led coup d’etat, with a bunch of revolting Dwarves revolting against the government. As his parents get kidnapped by the Dwarves, Galen has to find a way to warn the prince and raise an army to stop the revolution.

There are a bunch of paths you can go through here, I ended up getting allied with the small fey people, Pixies and Dryads and so forth and used them as allies to reach the prince and raise a hybrid army against the Dwarves. Looking through the book after that I can tell that there were other possible paths, like raising an army of Lizardmen for the same end or allying with some discontented Dwarves.

A fun multiple-choice adventure, we also get some pretty gruesome endings that only make the whole thing better and I’m sure more fascinating for the kids this was originally intended for. You can get, for example, drugged and eaten by a witch in a forest, a particularly freaky ending as you pass out while your friends are walking away from you. Sheesh! Another fun piece of D&D adventuring!
