Closing out 1982 with the Christmassy December issue of Polyhedron we get a longer, actually double the usual size newsletter, which is quickly turning into a magazine. Polyhedron just went from 16 to 32 pages, and although a good chunk of it is the gift catalogue and membership stuff at the back, it still allows for some more articles and content than usual.

A full page is dedicated to Gygax’s Holiday’s Greetings special editorial, with not only Gygax’s wishes for the holidays but also some of the plans for the following year. As we will soon see 1983 was a big year for TSR. More fun Christmas stuff comes with the Christmas Carols section with new TTRPG lyrics for famous songs as well as a Christmas Crossword puzzle.

As usual, and more so than Dragon magazine (that was also getting bigger but was increasingly centred around D&D and AD&D), Polyhedron divides it’s space quite equally between several games by TSR, like Top Secret, Gamma World and Dawn Patrol. The only real articles exclusively about AD&D here are the regular columns by Frank Mentzer Spelling Bee and Notes for the Dungeon Master. Spelling Bee covers several Polymorph versions (self and other) as well as Shape Change, clarifying some of the rules around those spells.

  1. This was my first issue of Polyhedron. I still remember that my membership # was 16205 and the original membership cards were hard plastic, just like a credit card. Thought that was pretty neat as a kid. Sorry for all of the commentary but I’m enjoying the trip down memory lane. Feel free to tell me to hush at any time.
