Bruce Nesmith would eventually be a lead designer for a small game that maybe you’ve heard of called Elder Scrolls: Skyrim, but everyone has modest starts and Dungeon! is certainly that. Published by TSR it was an adaptation of the Dungeon! boardgame, which itself was a kind of adaptation of Original D&D to boardgame format.

Here you have three distinct phases of the game, the first being character creation, which simply consists of selecting one of four classes (Elf, Hero, Superhero and Wizard) each demanding different amounts of gold to win the game, the better the character the more gold being demanded. Remember that at this time one gold piece was equivalent to one experience point, so the gold is basically a measure of XP here. You would create your characters, hopefully more than one as this is best experienced as a multiplayer game with players taking turns on the Apple II computer.

The next stage of the game is the dungeon delving itself, moving around during your turn looking for treasure or monsters, which brings us to the third phase of the game which is combat and looting. You find a monster, choose an action and try to hit, you loot the monster and get gold pieces towards the completion of the game. That’s it. Pretty simple. You can find the game for free online with the use of emulators or, you can just go to YouTube and see people play it!
