Not to be confused with the 1987 I12 module with the same name which actually compiles this module with others in the R series, making them into a coherent series, this one is the original tournament module which was put out for RPGA members and made for tournament play.

However, unlike most tournament modules which really skimp on the story and make it about a series of rooms that players have to solve, Egg of the Phoenix actually has an interesting story and lore content. This is complemented by a bunch of premade characters which actually have backstories for players to roleplay with, the quest giver Athelstan, a Paladin, is actually played by one of the party with the other members being his close friends that he contacts to go with him to retrieve the titular Egg. This kind of premade party with backstories would be most famously used a couple of years later in the Dragonlance series, but it’s really cool to see it starting out here in a kind of experimental way.

This is also a pretty diverse adventure as you get a wilderness adventure, a classical dungeon and interplanar travel where you might actually get to find the Princes of Elemental Evil if all goes wrong and you take portals to the Elemental Planes rather than the plane where Egg is. The Egg is in a pocket in the negative material plane, a kind of infinite graveyard from which players must retrieve the Egg or, very likely, die trying. Fun stuff.
