The second piece of AD&D material to come out of the UK, after the Fiend Folio earlier in the year, The Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh is a pretty classic module and a really good one as well. This was also a useful module as there were few things for beginner characters and this, being appropriate for characters of level 1-3, filled that pretty big gap in the AD&D modules.

This module is broken into two parts, set around the town of Saltmarsh in the world of Greyhawk, the first part covers a Haunted House which the players get to explore and where they unveil a criminal enterprise going on there, under the guise of a haunting. The second adventure is one of the earliest nautical adventures for the game and continues on from the discoveries in the haunted house and the PCs get to explore the Sea Ghost, a smuggler ship in the high seas.

It’s a pretty well written adventure with a clear plotline and great encounters. It’s actually a fun one to read just for the pleasure of it, with its detailed settings and a sense of setting the mood as well as the bait and switch of the haunted house plot. Fun stuff!
