The first adventure designed specifically for the D&D Expert rules, and which came bundled with the expert set, it is also notable for a couple of other reasons. Firstly it’s the first adventure module set explicitly in the world of Mystara, now the default setting for D&D as opposed to Greyhawk which would be the setting for AD&D. Secondly because it’s the first attempt at making a truly “wilderness” adventure.

As a wilderness adventure there are a couple of dungeon-like areas in the module but that is very much the least part of it, the adventure being set on an unexplored island for which the characters are given a map outline and which the characters have to chart the interior of. Clearly drawing influence from “lost world” stories, this is an Island full of Dinosaurs and strange monsters as well as so-called “primitive” people.

This last bit would never fly today for good reason, although there is a note explaining that the “natives” aren’t openly aggressive to the party, there is clearly an incentive to get the pretty good loot they are holding. So the characters are basically these well armed adventurers who come to their land, kill the natives for loot and culminate their adventure by kind of desecrating their sacred “taboo island” where the final temple is. Huh… Ok.
