Dragon seems like it’s getting bigger by the month, and truth is: it was. More pages, more color pages, longer articles. more free modules, all of it adding to a better magazine but also one that takes me longer to read through each time, even skipping the non-D&D items. Still, I have fun.

This issue the interior reflects the cover, with an article on Witches as NPCs, there had already been an article on witches early in Dragon’s run, but this is a revamped article on the concept with an added historical item about witches in general. Interestingly, and tying in with other TSR products, we get an article by Dave Cook, the designer of Slave Pits of the Undercity (A1) with tips on how to survive the module, both in a competitive and home environment.

We also get an early appearance by legendary designer, future TSR Creative Director and founder of the RPGA, Frank Mentzer as the winner of a best DM competition! We get a nice letter by a German player showing how D&D is spreading across the world and a “player’s feedback” form for DMs. Leomund’s Tiny Hut talks about the structure of combat rounds, a source of debate since 1974, really and Erol Otus provides a great drawing of an Amazon for the Bestiary. Other articles cover Illusions in D&D and how to determine if they are believed or not, as well as morality in RPGs.
