As Dragon 14 starts off you might think this isn’t going to be a DnD heavy issue, as there are a bunch of articles on other games, but it does eventually start focusing on DnD and it does collect a bunch of interesting articles. The first of these is a humorous article which is a kind of a report of an adventure partly from the point of view of a Rust Monster.

This isn’t the only humorous article as a series of articles on Monty Haul and his friends at play starts off in this issue, this time as a satire of high-powered characters and TSR employees. As usual with these humorous articles your mileage may vary, they don’t particularly work for me and have a feel of “you had to have been there” to them and I definitely I wasn’t there, wouldn’t even be born for another 4 years.

When it comes to better and more useful articles, though, you get a column by Gary Gygax where he explains the changes to the game with Original D&D, Basic D&D and AD&D all existing at this same time and he does a good job of explaining how they all work together (they would soon drop Original D&D, though). Another great article is the one on lycanthropy which closes off the issue, focused on the idea of players wanting to play Werebears, which were the only Lawful lycanthropes and therefore the more viable options, the article gives us an idea of level progression and abilities for Wereplayers. Fun stuff with some great Illustrations by DAT.
